What else besides a bikini has two pieces? A surfboard? The Pope Bisect
Carrying the Bisect on Block IslandOnce you've put it together, it makes lots of shade.Surface Motion's Bisect Section:
What is the Bisect? The Bisect is a two piece surfboard. It consists of a tail and nose that connect together. A fin is mounted in the traditional fin box. The kit breaks down and fits into a rectangular bag which is very easy to carry and which will fit easily into cars, trains, buses, and airplane baggage compartments. The Bisect revolutionizes surf travel, especially for longboard riders. As Bruce Brown discovered shooting "Endless Summer" and for surfers ever since, travelling in search of waves has always meant hassling with surfboard racks, oversize luggage fees, customs agents, and the stigma of being easily identified as a "surf bum". With the Bisect, you are simply carrying a piece of luggage shaped a little differently than the oversized bags of many fellow tourists. Various officials and the public are unlikely to pay you and your bag a second thought. Big Board Surfing, the Convenient Way.The Bisect's two pieces become one solid longboard through a system that uses three elements. An aluminum tube is inserted into a shaft in both sections, giving the connected board support at the stress point. Two molded pins on one piece fit into corresponding holes on the other, giving further support and alignment to the seam. Finally, two special clamps are inserted into wells on the surface and tightened to hold the pieces firmly together.
Bisect apart, in protective board socks. The clamps are ingeniously designed. Once inserted into the wells they lie flush with the deck and cannot even be felt if stepped on. They have a metal bolt as a core that can break under extreme stress as a kind of fuse. Amazingly, if one bolt breaks, the other clamp holds the board together and it's hard to tell the "fuse" has blown until you take it apart. I attribute this to the aluminum tube and pins doing much of the work of connecting the two pieces.
Assembled Bisect and bag, Rockaway Beach. It must be admitted that the Bisect board is given added weight through the connecting mechanisms. The board is pretty heavy in the bag, but the weight is evenly distributed and compact. In contrast to a regular longboard, it's very easy to maneuver the bag through doors, turnstiles, and up and down stairs. If you're into traditional longboarding, the added weight is actually welcome in the water. The board cruises like a classic 60s board and turns like a modern shape. Once back in the bag, even a strong wind will not bother you walking off the beach. No more will your shouldered board bag take you on a spinnaker run. |
