Tips for Bisect owners
The Bisect apart in two socksUse the socksI highly recommend the two piece sock that is sold as a Bisect accessory. It protects the pieces and makes it easier to slide into the bag. When on a beach, it's best to slide the socks part way off to expose the clamp cups. Then put the peices together and put the clamps in. Then take the socks off either end of the assembled board. This way you won't mess up your nice wax job in the sand. After a surf, you can lay the board on the socks stretched out on the sand, and again avoid getting sand in the works. Know which way your board goes in the bagPut the pieces in the bag facing the same way every time. For instance, I use the name tag window as a marker. I put the tail piece in first and make the tail face the window end, with the deck facing toward the window. I put it on the side of the bag nearest the window. This way, I know which way the deck is without having to feel for the rocker. So if I lay the board down in the bag in the sun, I lay it window down, thus deck down, and my wax is less likely to melt. Keep the parts togetherI like to put the parts in a ziplock baggie. I keep the baggie along with my "surf kit" with my wax and other goodies. You can also put the parts in the fin pocket in the bag. Outside breaks: bring parts in a fanny packIf you're going to paddle a long distance to surf, it may help to have a small bag around your waist. A little pouch is all it takes. Put your key and a full clamp assembly in the bag. You can make adjustments when you reach the lineup. In the event you break a bolt, take the whole spare clamp and put it in, and tighten it up. Also you can keep wax and sunscreen in the pouch. Wash the face platesI wash the face plates, cups, and holes after a surf, even if I don't have time to rinse the whole board. This keeps care of the plates, which seem to be the most vulnerable part of the system. Since I live in an apartment, I wash the pieces in the shower. The Bisect makes it easy to do this. Also, wash the center pole. The idea is to keep sand out of the system, and keep the face plate from degrading due to the effects of salt water on the plastic and glue. Wax the clampsA little wax on the bolts helps protect them from corrosion. Also, some wax in the cups helps keep them from falling out. Not too much though. You can scrape out excess wax with your fin screwdriver. Use a double shoulder strapSince the Bisect is heavy, it's nice to have two shoulder straps. I put one on either shoulder for long walks. Reinforce the strap staysOn both my Bisects, I had a shoe repairman sew the stays that attach to the shoulder straps. He used thick thread and double stitched them. I carry my board around a lot and didn't want the straps to pull out. Thane is planning to triple stitch them soon. |
