The Koan, used by practioners of Zen Buddism and meditation, is a story or parable that is used to place the mind in a meditative state. When I practice meditation away from the beach, I often use images from the surf or beach to paint in my mind a background where all senses are engaged in conjuring this image. This takes away all distraction and calms my emotions, allowing full concentration. I believe I can achieve a high level of concentration in sports and other performance persuits due to this meditation. When I surf, I use meditation to concentrate and block out fear and discomfort. Interestingly, the technique is different, since the images of the surf and beach are already all around me. Surf train koan: One day I took this subway route to the end to find something that became an important part of my life. Shouldn't I take all the trains to the last stop to see what else is there?
