Skating and text by Keith Johnson

This Tribute Project was done by looking at a lot of longboard surfing videos, watching good longboarders in person, and practicing a lot of longboard surfing myself. Waves are extended routines that incorporate long sequences of footwork. They will take you a good 100 yards down a hill or along your flatground spot. They are meant to have some relationship to surfing, and ideally could be cross training for a wave ride. The turns in a wave should correspond to the necessary cutbacks, stalls, nose rides, and other moves that would have to be done on a long pointbreak wave to milk it for a long ride, while showing off hotdog moves. The idea is that "tricks" will have a function, and won't be done only for show.

Waves use techniques and basic routines that I use in the style of skateboarding that I do on a big, flat, classic style skateboard. If you learn the techniques from the Lines and Arcs Layer 1 Reef material, and Walk Chains, you should have plenty of background material and should be able to make it through these Waves with a little practice. Making your own Waves will be your goal after you work through my Waves.

Basic Wave

Waves 1 uses conventional surfing longboard maneuvers in a logical sequence. As a setup, linked carving or kick carve turns start the routine. Then a walk to the nose and back is performed. A big kick turn comes at the end as a kickout type maneuver.

Wave 1 Turn and walk sequence.

Toeside set up turn, heelside kick-stall turn, walk, nose ride, backpedal, kickout.

Hotdog Waves

In the classic surf era, hotdogging meant showing off difficult walking and noseriding maneuvers while riding a longboard type of wave. These waves are more advanced routines that use more difficult footwork. Turns and walking are fully integrated, as in the grapevine walk. More difficult nose perches are used.

Wave 2 Turn and walk sequence.

Arching bottom turn, crossunder to heelside top turn, walk and drag stall, tip ride, backpedal, toeside kickout.

Wave 3

Grapevine, Nose Perch, Hang Foot Drag-Stall, Backpedal.

Wave 4

Grapevine, Nose 180, to Walk-the-Dog.
