Backwards push

If you're going to be doing these backwards tricks, you'll find yourself losing speed going backwards. It's very useful to be able to push backwards, with either foot. It also shows mastery and gets laughs from the crowd. It's not hard, but it feels strange and there are some technical tips that should help.

Still rolling, facing backwards, I reach my right foot back as far as I can reach it. This is made easier by bending my standing leg at the knee.

I bring my right leg strongly forward, which makes a nice backwards push. The push is done with the ball of the foot. It feels pretty strange, but as long as you reach the foot back to start the push, as shown in the previous frame, you should have no problem.

After the push, I bring my right foot up and close to my left, but don't put it back on the board. I keep my weight on my left foot. I glide along from the last push on one leg, and get ready to cross step toward the tail.

Backwards cross push

I place my right foot in front of my left, in a cross step to the tail. This will set up the next push.

Here I've gotten into a cross stance facing the tail and have put all my weight on my right foot. I intend to give another back push, this time with the other foot.

Technically this is a back cross push. My right foot remains in the cross stance, which means slightly turned out. This will be harder than regular push stance, where your foot is turned in.

If you review Lines Pushes, the forward cross push is a switch push. So is the back cross push. Again I reach my foot back, toward the nose, only this time it's my left toe I'm going to push with. This push from the other side is pretty difficult. If you learn to switch push, you're going to have a strong side and a weak side. Backwards is the same, with the cross pushes being weaker still for being back pushes.

Just give it a little shove and you'll still get a bit of speed. Try to follow through by bringing your push foot in front of your standing foot, with a kicking motion.

There are even harder pushes that I do, pushing on the wrong side of the board. Someday I'll show them on the site. For now, this ought to be a challenge for you push maniacs.

I place my left foot behind me and turn counter clockwise, to the left. Now I've regained my regular stance near the nose.

Next I'm going to use a half spinner step to get on the nose and finish the routine.
