Seabright Beach and the harbor
Photo by California Department of Fish and Game

This photo was later used to illustrate Griggs and Johnson's study of beach erosion. See 1979.

The whole sand flow system can be seen here. The San Lorenzo River, in the middle, is the source of much of the sand. Some sand drifts north where it widens the Boardwalk beach. The littoral drift is toward the south, thus the sand from the river is important for preserving beaches and cliffs as far away as Capitola and New Brighton Beach. The harbor jetty impedes the sand flow, and the harbor itself is a hole in the littoral drift.

Note plenty of sand to the north of the harbor. At right, Twin Lakes to the south has considerably less beach.
