Later measurements have shown that the San Lorenzo River annually feeds sand down the coast, some 300,000 cubic yards a year. The littoral drift carries sand west from the River Mouth then south to Capitola Beach. The Harbor will be in the middle of the drift, becoming a hole that will be plugged by the sand. Commentary: After this experiment, it is safe to assume the Army engineers knew there would be a sand shoaling problem in any harbor to be built.
