Twin Lakes '58

Twin Lakes Beach and Woods Lagoon outfall, 1958
from Monterey Bay Property magazine, Dec 1981

Visible in the photo is the old cypress tree on the present site of the Crow's Nest. This was a beach landmark at the time. Visible are cliffs on the west side of a creek which reach clear into the bay. Apparently the creek is the outfall of Woods Lagoon and the cliffs are the beach protected cliffs of present day Fourth Avenue.

Commentary: The steel test groin structure is not visible in Rommel's photograph, so presumably the photo was taken after its removal. Notice there is none of the organized shape of the waves at this spot that is characteristic of today's Twin Lakes surf.
